The Event Description
The transition to a more sustainable world requires today a revolution of the productive logic to rethink the concept of “waste”: from trash to resource. This is the founding principle of the circular economy, a philosophy that theorises an economic model based on the regeneration and revaluation of raw materials and waste. But because 80% of the environmental impact of a product or service is determined at the design stage, it is also necessary to revise the design of production processes and supply chains.
For this reason, an analytical approach based on Life Cycle Thinking (LCT) is increasingly spreading. LCT is a design methodology that considers the environmental, economic and social sustainability of products and services at each stage of their life cycle.
The lecture wil focus on Life Cycle Thinking and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) applied to waste management. After a brief theoretical introduction to the LCA methodology, the presentation will clarify how it can be applied to the waste management service. Therefore, case studies will be presented, related to the application of the LCA to individual plants and to whole integrated management systems, which will allow to understand how the LCA analysis can contribute to making waste management more efficient and sustainable.
The Speaker
Lucia Rigamonti teaches Phenomena of Pollution and Sanitary-Environmental Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. She has a degree in Environmental Engineering and a doctorate in Health and Environmental Engineering. Since 2007 she has been researching at the Politecnico di Milano studying strategies for integrated and sustainable management of waste and resources through the LCA method.
