Thermal Storage with Phase Change Materials
Phase Change Materials (PCMs) are substances that can absorb (and later release) a large amount of energy as they undergo a phase transition (typically from solid to liquid, and vice versa). Thanks to their high specific latent heat, PCMs are especially suitable for a wide range of Thermal Energy Storage (TES) applications, such as: space cooling, heating, district energy systems, waste heat recovery, thermal management of temperature-sensitive goods or equipment (food, drugs, electronics, and batteries, for instance), passive building construction, and many others.
We will discuss the potential of PCMs for energy efficiency and decarbonization with dr. Giulia Righetti, professor of Applied Thermodynamics and researcher at the Department of Management and Engineering (DTG) of the University of Padova.
Speaker
Giulia Righetti is a researcher and professor of Applied Thermodynamics at the Department of Management and Engineering (DTG), University of Padova. After graduating in Mechanical Engineering, Righetti obtained a PhD degree in Energy Engineering in 2016, focusing her work on low global warming potential refrigerants for cooling and transport applications. Her main research activities currently deal with two-phase heat exchange systems, including: phase change materials (PCMs) for thermal storage uses, sustainable refrigerants, innovative methods of electronic devices cooling, and finite element modeling (FEM) of flammable gas behavior in enclosed spaces. Righetti is also the author and co-author of 120 scientific contributions to several international journals and conference proceedings.
How to attend
The event will take place on November 21 at 4:30 PM, in Room M1 of the Mechanical Engineering building. Admission is free, and open to everyone. The lecture will be held in English, and it will last for about 50 minutes, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. Energy students who are interested in learning more about LEDS’ activities can stay after 6 PM to chat with our members.
